The fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man on the highway near Leduc, south of Edmonton, last weekend should be investigated as a hate crime, according to a Sikh group in Canada. The World Sikh Organization of Canada (WSO) wants Alberta RCMP to investigate the March 14 killing of 22-year-old Birinder Singh, who came to Canada from India three years ago, as motivated by hate. “We’re calling out police to investigate the whole incident by using the entire hate crime resources and tools,” Jaspreet Singh, the WSO’s regional president for Ontario, told OMNI News. “Because apparently this doesn’t look like a…
WASHINGTON — Trade talks with Canada ahead of the mandatory review of the continental trade pact are lagging behind those with Mexico, United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Wednesday. Greer told Fox Business that talks are moving ahead with his Mexican counterparts as the Trump administration negotiates changes to the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade, better known as CUSMA. “We’re having talks separately with Canada, but we’ve moved along with Mexico,” Greer said. “Canada is behind on this.” Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc met with Greer in Washington on March 6, days after the Trump administration announced it was…
Health Canada has announced a recall of Tim Hortons ceramic mugs because they may crack or break when filled with hot liquid. The affected mugs are white on the outside and pink on the inside, with a pink handle and a chocolate dip doughnut design on the front and back. The chocolate dip doughnut changes colour when warm liquid is poured into the mug, and transitions into a different type of doughnut. Health Canada confirmed Wednesday that Tim Hortons has received one report of a burn injury and 28 reports of “incidents” in Canada as of March 10. The agency…
The Ford government says it will wrap eight statues on the front lawn of Queen’s Park to prevent them from further vandalism ahead of expected protests next week. The move is in reaction to student-led protests earlier this month against planned changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program, which saw a statue of George Brown defaced with slogans and an obscenity against Premier Doug Ford. Two people were arrested in connection with that incident, and officials estimated the damage to the statue at more than $5,000. Ford says he welcomes protesters to the legislature but cautioned against vandalizing the statues.…
NEW YORK (AP) — Luigi Mangione ‘s lawyers asked a judge on Wednesday to postpone his federal trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson until early next year and said they will seek to have his state murder trial delayed until September. In a letter to U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett, Mangione’s lawyers said that the current schedule — the state trial in June and the federal trial in September — would put him “in the position of needing to prepare for two complicated and serious trials at the same time.” They asked Garnett to delay the federal…
The province’s police watchdog has cleared a Niagara police officer who shot and killed a man accused of murdering a woman and abducting a child last October. The director of the Special Investigations Unit says there are no reasonable grounds to charge the officer who killed 38-year-old Anthony Deschepper after an investigation found the suspect had fired three shots in his direction during a confrontation with police at a gas station in Niagara Falls, Ont. Joseph Martino says the officer’s life was in “imminent peril” and he fired his gun in self-defence. The SIU says Deschepper was being pursued by…
A Canadian computer scientist is one of this year’s recipients of a prestigious award nicknamed the Nobel Prize of computing. Université de Montréal professor Gilles Brassard has won the A.M. Turing Prize with IBM Research scientist Charles H. Bennett. The men nabbed the award because they created impenetrable encryption technology in the mid-1980s that laid the foundations for modern quantum science and secure communication. The award named after a British mathematician and Second World War codebreaker has been given out every year since 1966 by the New York-based Association for Computing Machinery. It is meant to honour scientists and engineers…
VILLA RICA, Ga. (AP) — Shaquille O’Neal is offering to pay for the funeral of a 12-year-old Georgia girl who died a few days after she collapsed following a fight after school. The former NBA superstar said he doesn’t want the family of Jada West to deal with the financial burden of a funeral while grieving for the sixth grader, who died at a hospital March 8. “No parent should ever have to bury their child, O’Neal said in a statement, “and if there is anything I can do to ease even a small part of that burden, then it…
Charges were tossed or evidence was excluded from Ontario court proceedings hundreds of times over the past decade due to police officers in urban areas violating the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a new report examining more than 600 cases has found. Report co-author Sunil Gurmukh, an adjunct law professor at Western University, said in an interview after the report’s release Wednesday that people accused of criminal offences are frequently “walking free” because of violations by officers in Toronto, Ottawa and Peel, York and Durham regions. “Police have a tough job, but they can still get the bad guys without…
Most Canadians want the government to ban or regulate the use of algorithms to set prices, a new poll suggests — with half of respondents saying the practice is unfair because it can result in people paying different prices for the same product. The Abacus Data poll, which was conducted online and cannot be assigned a margin of error, surveyed 1,931 Canadians on algorithmic pricing. The poll defined algorithmic pricing as the adjustment of prices in real time based on such factors as who is buying, the time of day and browsing behaviour. Half of those polled, 52 per cent,…

Peel police say the child, believed to be either 12 or 13 years of age, was struck in the area of Alexandra Ave and Fourth Street in Mississauga around 2:45 p.m. Investigators say early information suggests the boy and another young child were on some sort of motorized bike in the area before he was struck. Const. Tyler Bell-Morena said the traffic signals were functioning and in working order with the arms down, lights flashing and audible tone at the time…

Calls for an Ontario judge to apologize for suggesting three Toronto police officers lied and colluded in a high-profile criminal trial are inappropriate and undermine public confidence in the justice system, some legal observers said Wednesday. The president of Toronto’s police union urged Ontario Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy to publicly apologize to the officers Tuesday after an investigation by Ontario Provincial Police found no evidence of perjury or obstruction of justice in the case of Umar Zameer. Premier Doug Ford added his voice to the call Wednesday morning, saying the veteran judge “should apologize for accusing (the officers) of…
OTTAWA — Canada Border Services Agency says it has opened 372 immigration investigations in an effort to “disrupt extortion networks” across the country. The agency says that as of last Thursday, it had issued a total of 70 removal orders on various inadmissibility grounds, and 35 have been enforced.
