Australia’s clean sweep of England is on track after rain played havoc with the second Twenty20, cutting the match short with five balls to go. Australia’s clean sweep of England is on track after rain played havoc with the second Twenty20, cutting the match short with five balls to go. I am keeping my eyes glued to the DLS rate and Australia have managed to really slow down this English charge. I am seeing a few umbrellas around the ground, but I am also seeing some picnic blankets with fans stoically sitting there. It is summer after all. The England…
“The Living End: Painting and Other Technologies, 1970-2020” is a sprawling exhibition filling nearly the entirety of the MCA Chicago’s fourth floor. The title is a dig at the so-called death of painting, which has been foretold at least since the invention of the camera. The subtitle is where the action is, because the show is really a survey of new ways to paint, beginning in the mid-’60s with early computer collaborations and coming nearly up to the digitized present. A lot of the work is ugly, plenty of it is funny, and nearly all of it is experimental, or…
The writer Christopher Isherwood put it this way, in his novel “Goodbye to Berlin”: “I am a camera with its shutter open, quite passive, recording, not thinking.” The not-thinking part may not apply, since the technique is so thoughtfully deployed, but two films released in early 2025 build on this notion of observational perspective. “Nickel Boys,” already reviewed and, I think, the peak American achievement of the previous year, tells its story from the gracefully unforced forced perspectives of two teenage boys, the camera capturing what we see through one set of eyes, then the other. Other films have tried…
LGBTQ+ couples in Thailand made Thursday a life-changing occasion, registering their marriages legally on the first day a law took effect granting them the same rights as heterosexual couples. The enactment of the Marriage Equality Act makes Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia and the third place in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, after Taiwan and Nepal. As many as 300 couples had been expected to complete the formalities at a daylong gala celebration in an exhibition hall at a shopping mall in central Bangkok, but the number was still under 200 as evening arrived, with little over an…
Donald Trump is coming back to Davos. This time, virtually. The freshly reinaugurated U.S. president is to speak Thursday to an international audience for the first time after returning to the White House three days earlier, with a speech and question-and-answer by video conference at the World Economic Forum’s annual event. The fourth day of the annual gathering also has featured Javier Milei, the brash Argentine president, and Muhammad Yunus, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who became interim leader of Bangladesh after the longtime president was driven from power during a public uprising. Business and tech whizzes will get their…
The rare unfurling of an endangered plant that emits the smell of decaying flesh drew hundreds of devoted fans to a greenhouse in Sydney on Thursday where they joined three-hour lines to experience a momentous bloom -– and a fragrance evoking gym socks and rotting garbage. Tall, pointed and smelly, the corpse flower is scientifically known as amorphophallus titanum — or bunga bangkai in Indonesia, where the plants are found in the Sumatran rainforest. But to fans of this specimen, she’s Putricia — a portmanteau of “putrid” and “Patricia” eagerly adopted by her followers who, naturally, call themselves Putricians. For…
Rick Renteria was the manager, Luis Robert Jr. hadn’t yet played a major-league game and Yasmani Grandal and Dallas Keuchel were among the big free-agent additions the last time the Chicago White Sox held SoxFest. Let’s just say a lot has changed since then. The rebranded “SoxFest Live” takes place from 5-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ramova Theatre. It’s the team’s first fan festival since ahead of the 2020 season. The 2021 and ’22 versions had cancellations tied to COVID-19, while the team said “several factors” led to no event being held in 2023. The Sox held a gathering for…
The trouble started every day at around 3 p.m., after Cathy Higgins had spent five or six hours staring at an array of computer screens at her desk. Her university job overseeing research projects involved peering closely at numbers and details on contracts, applications and budgets. “My vision was so blurry, I couldn’t even see what was on the screen, and I was squinting so much that I could not function,” Higgins said. When her eyesight got bad, Higgins walked around and spoke with members of her staff. She began planning in-person meetings for afternoons. But she would resume the…
Famous places can get name changes, experts say, but they don’t always last. People enjoy the sunset over the water in the Gulf of Mexico during the seasonal king tides on Oct. 27, 2019, in Key Largo, Florida. As part of his prolific stream of executive orders this week, President Trump ordered that the name of the Gulf of Mexico be renamed “The Gulf of America.” (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images) As part of a torrent of decisions he issued hours after taking office, President Trump declared that the name of America’s tallest mountain be changed from Denali to Mount…

(Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group) After the Warriors beat Jordan Poole and the Wizards at Chase Center last weekend, Poole’s comments about how he loves “most of the guys over there” reverberated through Golden State’s locker room. At least they reached Draymond Green. Green, who infamously punched Poole in a preseason practice before the 2022-23 season, publicly apologized…
Seven San Antonio police officers were shot while responding to a “suicide in progress” call and the suspect was later found dead inside an apartment after a standoff, the city’s police chief said. The officers were shot Wednesday night and a SWAT team was called to the Stone Oak neighborhood, San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus said early Thursday. After several hours, the suspect was dead but it wasn’t immediately known how he died, McManus said. He described the suspect as a man in his 40s and said the original call to police came from a family member. Earlier, McManus…
President Donald Trump has vowed to reduce the number of federal workers. A view of the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building complex in downtown Oakland, Calif., on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. About 250,000 California residents are employed by the federal government, and about 38,000 live in the Bay Area. (Jane Tyska/Bay Area News Group) In his first days in office, President Donald Trump signed executive orders that sent many federal employees reeling: looming layoffs, a freeze on federal hiring and and new back-to-office expectations for many remote workers. On Wednesday, he announced that employees in diversity, equity and inclusion roles…
Pakistan’s lower house of parliament on Thursday passed a controversial bill that will give the government sweeping controls on social media, including sending users to prison for spreading disinformation. The bill was quickly passed after lawmakers from the opposition party of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan staged a walkout to denounce the law. Critics say the government is seeking to further suppress freedom of speech. Farhatullah Babar, a leading human rights activist, said the latest changes to cybercrime law were aimed at “further stifling the freedom of expression through setting up of multiple authorities under executive control, enlarging the…

Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS are facing fresh scrutiny from Britain’s competition watchdog, which announced investigations Thursday targeting the two tech giants’ mobile phone ecosystems under new powers to crack down on digital market abuses. The Competition and Markets Authority said it launched separate investigations to determine whether the mobile ecosystems controlled by Apple and Google should be given “strategic market status” that would mandate changes in the companies’ practices. The watchdog is flexing its newly acquired regulatory muscles again after the new digital market rules took effect at the start of the year. The CMA has already used the…
