Following the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in Bengaluru, Delhi Public School (DPS) Bengaluru and Mysuru board member and Congress leader Mansoor Ali Khan announced heightened surveillance measures at the school.

Speaking about the decision, Khan emphasised the importance of safeguarding students from respiratory illnesses, especially as children are more vulnerable to such infections.

“We have issued circulars to parents, advising them not to send their children to school if they have even mild symptoms like a cough, cold, or sore throat,” said Khan. “We do not want to cause panic among students or parents, but we are taking all necessary precautions and will send out a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure everyone is informed.”

Khan further reassured parents, stating that students need not worry about assessments or tests. “If a student is unwell, they will have the option to attend assessments later,” he said. Additionally, class teachers have been instructed to monitor students closely, and if any child exhibits symptoms, their parents will be immediately contacted to take them home.

This proactive approach follows the detection of three cases of HMPV-induced respiratory distress in India, two in Bengaluru and one in Ahmedabad. The outbreak has raised concerns about a possible spread of the virus, especially after China reported a surge in infections. In response to the Bengaluru cases, the Karnataka government has issued an advisory urging citizens to avoid public places if symptomatic and to wear masks in crowded areas to mitigate transmission risks.
