Body of 9-Year-Old Girl Reported Missing Is Found in Northern New York

The authorities on Sunday found the body of a 9-year-old girl who had been reported as missing and possibly abducted in a Northern New York community.

The girl, Melina Galanis Frattolin, of Canada, was found dead in Ticonderoga, N.Y., the New York State Police said in a statement.

The authorities did not elaborate on a cause of death or where specifically she was found in Ticonderoga, which is in Essex County, N.Y., and about 100 miles north of Albany.

In a statement on Sunday, the State Police said there was “no indication that an abduction occurred, and there is no threat to the public.”

The State Police said that the Warren County Sheriff’s Office had received a call from a man, later identified as Luciano Frattolin, 45, of Canada, who reported his daughter missing “with a possible abduction” near Exit 22 of Interstate 87 in Lake George, N.Y., around 10 p.m. on Saturday.

The State Police issued an Amber Alert, a bulletin for a missing or endangered child, and warned that “the child was taken under circumstances that lead police to believe that they are in imminent danger of serious bodily harm and/or death.”

The State Police said on Sunday that, as the investigation progressed, they came to believe that the initial account of a possible abduction had been incorrect.

Lake George, a popular summertime tourist destination, is in the state’s Adirondack region of mountains and forests, about 200 miles north of New York City.

The girl’s body was found about 38 miles north of where she was reported missing.

Efforts to reach the Essex County district attorney, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, State Police and Ticonderoga police were unsuccessful. Mr. Frattolin could not be reached.

Additional details were not immediately available on Sunday. The State Police said it expects to have a briefing for the news media on Monday.
