A 13-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a Coles supermarket worker at an Ipswich shopping centre.

Queensland police said the teen had allegedly approached the Coles employee at the Yamanto Central shopping centre in Ipswich, south-west of Brisbane, on Monday evening.

He is accused of stabbing the 63-year-old woman in the back with a knife before running away.

Members of the public held on to the teenager until police arrived.

Police said officers had given first aid to the injured woman before she was taken to Princess Alexandra hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

The boy was taken into custody and has been charged with attempt to murder.

He was due to face the Ipswich children’s court on Tuesday.
