Tkachuk will miss his sixth straight game on Friday night against the Montreal Canadiens at the Canadian Tire Centre with an upper-body ailment he suffered on March 30 against the Pittsburgh Penguins

He didn’t participate in Thursday’s practice, but will resume skating on Friday.

“I’m feeling good,” Tkachuk said on Thursday. “I’m just progressing, day in and day out. I’m feeling good today. I’m starting to skate tomorrow, so I’m excited about that, which I’m happy about.”

Tkachuk is confident that if he doesn’t suit up for any of the club’s final four regular-season games, he will be ready for Game 1 of the playoffs.

When the latest injury occurred, he already was dealing with a lower-body ailment — in this case, rest is a weapon.

“I’m taking the time to take care of everything that I need and just get ready for whenever that (return) may be,” Tkachuk added. “But I think it’s on me if I start thinking too far ahead, and we’re just every day, it’s just an opportunity to feel good, get better and get ready to go.

“I want to play. I don’t like watching and the guys have really helped me out the last bunch of games, putting us in the position that we’re in, and I’m just going to keep getting better every single day.”

Tkachuk had already headed to bed when the Senators clinched a playoff spot for the first time in his career. He watched the end of the club’s 5-2 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets and then flipped to television to see the Montreal Canadiens knock off the Detroit Red Wings.

“I was watching the (Ottawa) game and I thought, ‘Well, it’s not happening the way we want’ so I watched the other game and when I saw the empty-netter I was pretty fired up,” Tkachuk said with a smile.

It wasn’t quite the celebration he envisioned, but his family was quick to reach out to let him know how excited they were.

Ottawa owner Michael Andlauer sent a congratulatory text and Tkachuk spoke with Steve Staios, the club’s president of hockey operations and general manager, along with coach Travis Green.

“I wish I could have been with the guys there to enjoy that moment, but it made today that much better to share with those guys, talk to these guys,” Tkachuk said.

“It was a pretty awesome feeling and just to know that there’s a lot more, lot more to come. And so one thing and be happy. Feel that relief, but I don’t feel like there’s any complacency in this room.”
