Burst of snow could mean bad visibility for Friday evening commuteon February 14, 2025 at 2:42 pm

National Weather Service officials warned Friday morning that a burst of snow is expected in the evening in portions of north central and northeast Illinois as well as northwest Indiana.

For days, weather officials have cautioned about a weather system headed for the area. On Friday, officials said an evening burst of snow was expected for areas north of I-88 where up to 1 to 3 inches is possible within a short period.

On Friday morning, officials expected the frigid temperatures to continue in the area. The snow combined with gusty winds may make visibility difficult for motorists, making traveling hazardous.

Another period of accumulating snow was possible across the area in the late night hours which may transition to freezing rain and drizzle, officials said.

Current conditions at O’Hare International Airport are partly cloudy at 5 degrees with a windchill of negative 15. Farther south at Midway Airport conditions are the same at 7 degrees with a windchill of negative 14.

On Friday, temperatures are expected in the high 20s when there is a 20 percent chance of snow. In the evening, there is an 80 percent chance of snow, officials said.

On Saturday, there is a 40 to 80 percent chance of a wintry mix in the area with blustery conditions.

Officials also warned of a possibility of river ice forming ice river jams starting Friday night into Saturday and continuing into next week impacting the Rock, Fox, Des Plaines and Kankakee river basins.
