A Calgary Transit operator was injured after being struck by a vehicle in Fairmount following a “road rage incident” on Wednesday morning, according to police.

The collision occurred at the intersection of Fairmount Drive and Fyffe Road S.E. at 9:15 a.m.

Police say they believe it stemmed from a road rage incident between the driver of another vehicle and a Calgary Transit bus operator. The operator of the bus reportedly exited his vehicle and “sustained a lower body injury” when the other vehicle drove into him.

The president of Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 583, which represents Calgary Transit operators, said the union is aware of the incident. The bus operator was transported to hospital with a serious leg injury.

“It sounds like it’s not life-threatening, but the injuries are quite severe, enough to be taken to urgent care,” said the union’s president, Mike Mahar.

“It’s still a horrific incident that obviously would be completely unnecessary and preventable, but thank goodness it’s not something that appears to be life-threatening at this point.”

Mahar said details are still “sketchy” but that if an investigation reveals the collision was intentional, the union would possibly press for Calgary police to lay criminal charges.

“If this is intentional and someone has used their vehicle to injure one of the transit operators, obviously that’s about as serious as it gets,” he said. “We’ll be pursuing whatever proper action needs to take place to ensure that our operator is supported.”
