Hadestown: Teen Edition tells the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice: two lovers who fight against their fate to try and bring the world back into tune. The gods Hades and Persephone were once in love, and their disharmony is causing the cold, dark, winter to be drawn out endlessly. Orpheus is trying to right the world through his song of the gods’ love, while Eurydice is just a poor, hungry, young girl looking for something to eat. Their fates collide and they fall in love, and all is well until Eurydice is dragged down to the Underworld by Hades. Orpheus embarks on the treacherous journey to not only bring the girl he loves home, but to confront the gods. It’s an old song, a tale of love from long ago, and SWL Theatre Productions is ready to sing it for you again, and again. This jazz-folk, self-proclaimed ‘tragedy’, will be performed at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School.

Something Rotten Jr.
Article content
Something Rotten! Jr. by John O’Farrell and Karey & Wayne Kirkpatrick is a hilarious musical comedy set in Renaissance England, where brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom struggle to find success as playwrights while living in the shadow of the famous William Shakespeare. Desperate for a hit, Nick consults a soothsayer who predicts that the future of theatre will involve singing, dancing, and acting—all at the same time! Inspired, the Bottom brothers set out to write the world’s very first musical. Meanwhile, Nigel falls in love with Portia, a sweet Puritan girl whose strict father disapproves of the theatre. As the brothers work on their show, chaos ensues with mistaken identities, outrageous performances, and Shakespeare’s meddling. In the end, the Bottoms learn that staying true to themselves is more important than chasing fame. Their “something rotten” turns into something wonderfully original. The show celebrates creativity, family, and the joy of following one’s own path.

Article content
Puffs, or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic is a delightfully humorous play based on a certain beloved seven-part book series about a boy with a lightning-shaped scar. This time around, however, the story shines a spotlight on the Puffs, a loveable group of underdogs just trying to survive their years at that famous school of witchcraft and wizardry. The play follows three unlikely heroes: Wayne, Oliver and Megan, as they navigate seven fast-paced and chaotic years filled with spells, surprises and heart. Together, they strive not for glory, but to just make it through these seven years (and maybe bring a little bit of recognition to their overlooked house). Watch as Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School performs this whimsical comedy.

The Tortoise and the Hare: Blood and Glory
Article content
West Carleton presents the ancient fable, The Tortoise and The Hare, written by the equally ancient Greek storyteller Aesop. An arrogant, lazy rabbit is bested in a race against a persistent turtle that just won’t give up. Or so you’ve been led to believe. There is much more to this story than we were once told. The Hare is clever and purposeful, the Tortoise kind and careless, they make a perfect pair. Love is afoot, and the stakes couldn’t be higher in this romantic comedy. We invite you to enjoy West’s version of this historically inaccurate but comically brilliant, Ancient Fable!
