A Chicago man was sentenced to 45 years Wednesday after admitting a role in a January 2023 Gary gas station slaying.
Melvion “Fatboy” Delphie, 23, pleaded guilty to murder in July. The U.S. Marshals arrested him in Chicago in December 2023.
Gary Police responded at 8 p.m. Jan. 28, 2023 drug robbery inside One Stop convenience store, 719 W. 45th Avenue.
Security footage appeared to show Alexander “Taz” Hudson, 26, selling marijuana to Delphie. Hudson was found shot in the chest, lying on his back inside.
They appear to chat and briefly fist-bump before Hudson lets him smell the drugs. Delphie pays him cash, as Hudson counts the money and hands him a marijuana baggie. Co-defendant Larry Saunders and Delphie appear to go in and out of the store various times.
Suddenly, Delphie tried to grab the gun in Hudson’s pocket. As they struggled, Saunders flashed a gun and Hudson collapsed a few seconds later, according to security footage. Police believe the pair ran down the 4500 block of Harrison Street toward Saunders’ house.
William Hudson, the victim’s father, said after the hearing that his son knew Delphie’s family and had once helped paint a house for Delphie’s grandmother. His son trusted them and didn’t think they would do anything to him.
“I’m upset, it’s not enough time,” he said. “They made a deal to get rid of the case.”
Every day, he looks at an urn and left his son’s bedroom intact. Alexander was “loving, fun, caring,” William said. He had a great laugh, his sister said.
His son bought marijuana from a dispensary. He worked two jobs in the restaurant industry. If you wanted something, he would “give it to you,” he said. Hudson had a license for computers and started a lawn care business, he said.
He believed Delphie and Saunders “plotted on him” – drawing him to the convenience store after work.
His son went to the store often and played video games with the owner. Delphie’s grandmother apologized at one point to him.
“It’s like, why?” William said. “(His death) doesn’t make sense to me.”
Delphie was represented by public defenders Mike Woods and Amanda Hires.
After the hearing, Hires said Delphie “accepted responsibility.” Court documents indicate investigators couldn’t conclude which person killed him.
In court, Delphie apologized to the victim’s family, she said.
Deputy Prosecutor Veronica Gonzalez was assigned. The case was before Judge Natalie Bokota.
Saunders’s sentencing is scheduled for Thursday. He lived a block from the store, according to the affidavit.
