A suspect in a North Lawndale burglary is dead after a shootout Sunday with police that’s now under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability
Officers chased the burglary suspect in the 1800 block of South Central Park Avenue around 11 a.m. Sunday morning , which led to “an exchange of gunfire at multiple locations in the immediate area,” according to a preliminary statement from the Chicago Police Department. COPA initially reported the shooting near the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue.
Police said the suspect fired a gun and officers were returning fire when the suspect was shot by an officer. The suspect was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead there. The officers involved in the shooting also were taken to a hospital for observation, and a weapon was recovered, police said.
Officers involved “will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum period of 30 days,” according to police.

An officer-involved shooting in North Lawndale is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, according to a social media post by the agency.
The shooting took place near the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue. It is unclear if any officers or victims were injured in the shooting. COPA investigators were on the scene Sunday, a spokesperson told the Tribune.
Chicago police have not released any details about the shooting.
