‘Delete!’ Allie Sherlock’s fans are determined to suss out the story behind her new song

Chances are you’ve heard one of Allie Sherlock’s viral covers over the years but the Irish singer is now in a new era and excited – and a little nervous – to be releasing her own music.

Allie shot to fame at the tender age of 12 after her cover of Ed Sheeran’s song Supermarket Flowers hit the big time and she was even flown over to LA to appear on the Ellen Show.

Kicking things off in style, Allie’s song Ex-Friend is released on Friday 31 January. The track is a powerful anthem of heartbreak, betrayal, and empowerment and truly taps into teenage angst.

Allie wrote the song with Ollie Green (Freya Ridings, Tom Grennan, Bebe Rexha) and it happens to be based on an experience she had with a ‘frenemie’ a few years ago.

‘The story of the song happened a good few years ago. I was pretty young, there’s actually a lyric in the song that says it was 2019,’ she recalled to EVOKE. ‘I had this friend and I really, really liked this guy.

‘I was picturing myself with him, I wanted him to be my boyfriend and my friend at the time, I’m going to say she stole him although he wasn’t mine, but she took him from me.’

Allie continued with a laugh: ‘He was mine in my head, so when she took him it really bothered me, and I was like “bye!” This friend and I weren’t close, we were kind of frenemies, but once that happened I was like, “you know, It’s over. I’m not being your friend anymore” and we haven’t spoken since.’

With such descriptive lyrics in Ex-Friend, is Allie worried that the former pal who inspired it might recognise themselves in the lyrics?

Well, a little. Allie said: ‘It is quite an obvious song. Once you listen to the verses and stuff, it’s quite descriptive. I’m saying it happened in 2019, I kind of describe the guy in there, so I’m a little bit nervous, but you know what, it comes with the territory. I’m a songwriter. I’ve got to write about these things.’

Allie added that her fans are already trying to guess who the song is about from the teasers she’s been sharing online in the lead-up to the release.

‘There’s actually people already who are like, “Oh, is it this person you’re talking about?” when I’m teasing it online,’ she said, half shocked and half impressed at the sleuthing. ‘They comment it on my posts and I’m like “delete!” Some of them say the person’s name as well as which I definitely delete!’

Allie, like most people in the public eye, knows that it can be tough having the attention of thousands on you but says she’s well used to it now after years of practice.

‘It was crazy, being 12 and 13 [when she first went viral] and growing up in the past seven years, it was a wild journey… there are the positives and there are the negatives. You’ve got keyboard warriors hating and commenting on every little thing about your life and assuming this and assuming that but obviously there’s the amazing side of it as well, getting to perform, getting to release, and supporting some of my favourite artists along the way. There’s more positive than negative,’ Allie reflected.

She does admits that some of the comments do get to her, saying that some people just know where to hit and what is an insecurity.

‘There’s always the ones that will really get you, they’ll get to that personal thing that is your big insecurity but I mostly don’t read them, depending on my mood,’ Allie said. ’99 percent of the time I do not read the comments. But the times I do, if they do bother me, I’m very good at letting things go.

‘Life is too short to be bothered by these people that I don’t even know. Why would I care about their opinions? Sometimes if they comment on my body or something, that’s probably the only thing that will get to me, but other than that, I don’t really care.’

It’s not all bad though and Allie’s fans are great at speaking up for her online. She added: ‘It’s great to see that when someone’s posted something hateful to see the other people who back me up.’

Allie’s single Ex-Friend is out from January 31.
