Spruce Meadows announced Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, a member of the British royal family as its first ever royal “patron”.

An invitation was extended to Sophie, for later in this year, said Linda Southern-Heathcott, Spruce Meadows President and CEO on Tuesday.

“It is an incredible honor for us because it symbolizes her support of Spruce Meadows and all that we do here in the community, and the Duchess recognizes her patronages align with many of ours, health and well being, amateur sport, grass roots, sport, military women, equality for women frontline workers.”

Sophie is married to Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, the youngest sibling of King Charles III.

The equestrian show jumping venue has drawn several A-list spectators over the years, from singer-songwriter “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen to opera star Luciano Pavarotti.

It’s not the first time royalty has been involved at Spruce Meadows.

On May 14, 1988 Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands arrived as an honoured guest, while on June 29, 1990, Queen Elizabeth attended with lady-in-waiting Marg Southern.

This summer, Spruce Meadows has five acts for an inaugural concert series — a new stage was completed last year, along with a new restaurant overlooking the grounds.

Country singer Dean Brody performs on June 7, followed by City and Colour (Dallas Green) on June 14-15.

Canadian indie rock act Metric will play on June 28, and Brett Kissell headlines on July 1. Grammy winner Leon Bridges will have his first ever Calgary performance on July 5-6.
