India and Pakistan on Wednesday shared a list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral agreement that obstructs both sides from attacking each other’s atomic facilities.
The exchange occurred under the agreement on the Prohibition of Attack against Nuclear Installations and Facilities, signed on December 31, 1988, and entered into force on January 27, 1991, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The pact requires both sides to inform each other of the atomic facilities on January 1 every year.
Diplomatic channels in New Delhi and Islamabad streamlined the exchange.
“India and Pakistan today exchanged, through diplomatic channels, simultaneously at New Delhi and Islamabad, the list of nuclear installations and facilities covered under the agreement on the prohibition of attack against nuclear installations and facilities,” the MEA was quoted as saying by news agency PTI in its report.
This came amid strained bilateral ties between the two nations over the Kashmir dispute and cross-border terrorism.
“This is the 34th consecutive exchange of such lists between the two countries, the first one having taken place on January 1, 1992,” the MEA said in a statement.
