A daycare centre was set alight and painted with offensive graffiti in an antisemitic attack in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on Tuesday morning.

The Only About Children childcare centre on Storey Street in Maroubra went up in flames just before 1am.

When police and firefighters arrived they found offensive graffiti reading “f— the Jews” sprayed in black paint on a fence.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the blaze, however, the building was significantly damaged.

The building was unoccupied at the time, and there were no injuries.

“Officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command established a crime scene and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced,” a police spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information, CCTV and/or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

The blaze is yet another escalation in recent cases of antisemitic vandalism.

Last week the former home of prominent Jewish Australian, Executive Council of Australian Jewry co-chief executive Alex Ryvchin, was targeted in a firebombing.

Two vehicles were set ablaze, multiple vehicles painted with antisemitic graffiti and the Dover Heights home splashed with red paint.

“There is an evil at work in this country,” Ryvchin said after the incident.

“We’re less safe, we’re less free, and this is now becoming the norm. We’ve been saying for so long, things like this can’t be normalised. When we wake up every day and it’s another place being hit, it is the norm, and we have to wake up to the fact that, sadly, this is who we are.”
