In a new post, Gunn shared a message he received from Momoa when he was confirmed to lead DC Studios alongside Peter Safran.

“On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from Jason Momoa on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo,” Gunn posted on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter.

Gunn continued, “I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life & can’t wait to share that with all of you.”

In the text exchange, Momoa says, “fucking LOBO,” to which Gunn replies, “Dude I’ve said you should be Lobo for years, no lie.”

Deadline reported in December 2024 that Momoa had been tapped to play the antihero. Lobo, who has a violent and irreverent personality, hails from the planet Czarnia. He possesses superhuman strength, regenerative abilities, and an invulnerability that makes him a formidable opponent. Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, the character is often depicted as a bounty hunter who enjoys chaos and destruction.

When Momoa was confirmed as Lobo, he took to Instagram to share his excitement, captioning his post, “They called.”

The actor also shared a screenshot of a past interview where he expressed his interest in playing Lobo, saying, “I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role.’ If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah.”

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow cast Milly Alcock in the title role, with Matthias Schoenaerts playing villain Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll. Craig Gillespie is set to direct the DC film from a script by Ana Nogueira, based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series.
