McLaren’s Lando Norris has claimed a dramatic win in the Australian Grand Prix, pipping reigning Formula 1 world champion Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Australian Oscar Piastri – Norris’ teammate – followed him closely for more than 40 laps and was poised for a podium finish before spinning off the track on lap 44. He was able to return to the race and tried valiantly to weave through the field.
Piastri finished ninth.
Verstappen was second for Red Bull and Mercedes’ George Russell third in wild conditions at Albert Park.
“It was tricky conditions,” said Norris, who started on pole position.
“Dealing with the pressure, dealing with Max, dealing with Oscar behind me … to not have a mistake that cost me anything I guess I can take a bit of credit for that.”
Australian driver Jack Doohan crashed out of the race on the opening lap, ramping up the pressure on him to keep his seat at Alpine.
Doohan lost control on turn six, spinning on the slippery track and crashing into the wall.
The Australian has been forced to contend with speculation that he could be replaced by young Argentinian Franco Colapinto, who is Alpine’s reserve driver.
When Doohan crashed out his father, motorcycle legend Mick, shook his head in the garage.
