The storm has been described as “one of the most severe” to hit Ireland.

Taking to X, the Road Safety Authority revealed that all test centres in Ireland will be closed on Friday.

Met Eireann has placed all of Ireland on a red wind warning for Friday, with an orange to follow once this is lifted.

Drivers will be given a later date once the weather clears up.

The RSA said: “Important Notice: Driving Tests, Friday 24 January 2025.

“Due to Storm Éowyn, all driving tests scheduled for Friday 24 January have been cancelled.”

The safety group added that impacted candidates will be notified by email or text, and they will be issued a new test appointment invitation in the coming days.

Schools in all 26 counties under this red alert have also been ordered to shut, with many businesses taking on the same advice.

Public transport has also been impacted, with the NTA this morning ordering a nationwide shutdown of services and Irish airports “monitoring” the situation.

Snow, sleet and heavy rain will also arrive today alongside the “damaging” wind, with millions warned to stay indoors.

NCT Ireland also issued an update on X, stating that all of their test centres will be closed on Friday.

Candidates must contact them at 014135992 to reschedule their test without incurring cancellation fees.

They said: “All NCT Centres are closed for the duration of the Red Weather Warning.

“If you have an appointment on Jan 24, call us at 014135992 to reschedule without incurring cancellation/rearrangement fees.”

Meanwhile, the RSA is urging motorists to exercise extreme caution as a Red Weather Warning has been issued for Storm Eowyn.

URGENT TRAVEL WARNING

Drivers are strongly advised not to travel on Friday while the red weather warning is in effect and to avoid unnecessary travel even after it passes, due to the extremely strong winds.

These winds will bring down trees and power lines, damage property, create flying debris, and cause road blockages, along with possible coastal flooding.

The RSA said: “The Road Safety Authority is urging the public to take extreme caution as a Red Weather Warning has been issued for the unprecedented and life-threatening Storm Éowyn.

“This is not a typical weather event — it has the potential to be a significant and historic storm that poses a serious risk to life.”

The safety group added that public safety is the priority, and everyone is urged to act responsibly to protect themselves and others.

If travel is not essential, it’s best to stay indoors, secure your property and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable, with dangerous storm surges and flooding expected, so it’s critical not to put yourself in harm’s way.
