Measles cases continue to spread in Utah, with a new case reported in northern Utah.
Measles has now spread into a previously untouched portion of northern Utah, the Department of Health and Human Services announced through its measles-response website.
As of Tuesday, the department reported 36 confirmed cases in Utah, most located in the southwestern part of the state and smaller swath in central Utah. But one reported infection in the Bear River Health Department district, which encompasses Box Elder, Cache and Rich counties, shows the highly contagious disease has spread north months after the outbreak began.
Officials say people in the area may have been exposed to the virus at the Chick-fil-A off of State Road 165 in Providence, in Cache County, if they were there between 6:30-9 p.m. on Sep. 11. Those at the Budge Clinic, 1350 N. 500 East in Logan, between 3-6:30 p.m. on Sep. 15 may have also been exposed, according to the health department.
The department says those exposed atthe restaurant should watch for symptoms — like a high fever and cough, or a rash — through Oct. 2, and those exposed at the clinic should be on the lookout through Oct. 6.
Cache County is the fourth county that the department has confirmed cases in during the current outbreak, which began in June with a singlecase in Utah County.
Of the confirmed measles cases, 25 have been in the Southwest Utah district (consisting of Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane and Washington Counties), three in the Southeast district (Carbon, Emery, Grand and San Juan counties), seven in Utah County and one in the Bear River district, according to the health department.
Three of those districts — Bear River, Utah County and Southwest Utah — have also seen measles in their wastewaterwithin the past month, the health department reports. These other districts without confirmed cases have also found measles in sewage:
Wastewater in the Central Utah and the San Juan districts has not been tested, according to the state.
Dr. Leisha Nolen, the state’s epidemiologist, said the wastewaterresults mean people should be aware that measles could be found in areas of the state without confirmed cases.
There are active symptom watches in effect for those who visited the Chick-fil-A and clinic in Cache County, as well as for individuals who were at Water Canyon High School, in Hildale in Washington County, on Sep. 3. That watch in southern Utah ends Wednesday.
As of Sep. 16, there were 1,491 confirmed measles cases in 42 jurisdictions across the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last year, the CDC says the U.S. saw only 285 cases. Weekly cases throughout the nation spiked this year in March, according to CDC data.
Measles symptoms typically appear within one to two weeks of exposure, according to the health department, and can consist of a high fever and cough, runny nose or red eyes. After four days of fever, the department says a rash will normally appear.
Those who develop symptoms should stay away from other people and call their healthcare provider before going to their doctor, the health department said.
The best way to prevent measles, according to the health department, is to get the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine from their healthcare provider. The vaccine is 97% effective in people who receive two doses.
