The new year is set to begin on a freezing note with Jammu and Kashmir expected to witness heavy snowfall and rain in parts of North India starting from January 4, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Tuesday.
The Met Department said this was due to a Western Disturbance over Pakistan and adjoining areas.
“We are expecting an active Western Disturbance from January 4, which may cause light to moderate rain in Northwest India, heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, and light to moderate snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” IMD scientist Naresh Kumar said.

He said there was no expected change in the temperature in the next 24 hours, but a spike of 2 to 4 degrees was likely in North India thereafter.
“A cold wave may be experienced in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in the next 24 hours. Cold day conditions are expected over Punjab and Haryana for the next two days, where we have issued an orange alert for today,” Kumar added.
On Monday, cold wave conditions intensified in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, where mercury plunged several degrees below the freezing point.
While Gulmarg recorded a night temperature of minus 10 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam registered a low of minus 9.2 degrees Celsius.
In Srinagar, the night temperature dipped to minus 0.9 degrees Celsius, a little more than a degree above the normal temperature for this time of the year, as per weather officials.
In its latest weather update, the IMD has predicted dense fog in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, West Bengal, Sikkim till tomorrow; and Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura till January 5.
COLD DAY CONDITIONS IN DELHI TILL JANUARY 3
The Met Department said cold day conditions will prevail in Delhi until January 3, with no relief for residents of the national capital from the freezing weather.
On Tuesday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.6 degrees Celsius, 2.6 notches above the normal. The maximum temperature is expected to settle at 15 degrees.
The IMD update said the sky will remain mainly clear on Tuesday and Wednesday, but is likely to be cloudy on Thursday and Friday. But there was no forecast for rain in the national capital.
On December 28, Delhi recorded its highest rainfall in a single day in December in 101 years, which also contributed to a significant dip in temperature, while the air quality levels improved to “moderate”.
Meanwhile, a layer of dense fog is expected to engulf the city in the same period, reducing visibility.
