More than a third of Canadians — 39% — expect the U.S. trade war to persist until President Donald Trump is gone from office — if he does indeed leave after a second term, according to a new Angus Reid survey.
And if that’s the case, more Canadians are ready to fight, embracing the “elbows up” approach. The survey found that 63% think Canada should play hardball, up from 49% who felt that way in December.
Still, 28% of those surveyed were more inclined to negotiate, while 3% said they would concede whatever the U.S. demands in order to avoid tariffs, the latter which has dropped from 10% in December.
When asked what they would do if tariffs created a recession and significant job loss in Canada, 61% said they would continue to play hardball.
The Angus Reid Institute conducted this online survey from March 28-31 among a randomized sample of 2,131 Canadian adults who are members of Angus Reid Forum.
For comparison purposes only, a probability sample of this size would carry a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
