OAKLAND — Firefighters found a person dead Monday morning following a two-alarm fire at a warehouse, officials said.
Crews controlled the blaze that originally was thought to have burned more than one warehouse. They also prevented the blaze from spreading to other nearby buildings, Oakland Fire spokesperson Michael Hunt said.
Firefighters found the body inside the building during their overhaul of the fire, Hunt said. It was not known whether it was a man or woman. The Alameda County Coroner had been summoned to the scene.
The warehouse originally was thought to be vacant when crews were called to 10000 block of Russet Street, near 109th Avenue, about 5:45 a.m., officials said. The first engine arrived within four minutes of the initial call.
Fire crews requested a second alarm at 6 a.m. to protect the other buildings, Hunt said. Crews controlled the fire by 6:45.
Investigators remained at the scene past 9:30 to determine how and where the blaze began.
