WATSONVILLE — A Watsonville man was arrested last week on allegations that he sexually abused a minor at a local day care, the Watsonville Police Department announced in a social media post.

Ramon Castillo-Ruiz, 28, was arrested Thursday on a felony charge of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 and a misdemeanor charge of possessing a controlled substance. He was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $20,000 in bail.

Police said the 11-year-old victim came forward to report they had allegedly been molested by Castillo-Ruiz when the victim was between 4 and 6 years old. Castillo-Ruiz reportedly lived in a home on the 400 block of Rogge Street where the day care operated. Police did not provide the name of the day care or the role Castillo-Ruiz served in the operation.

On Thursday morning, detectives served a search warrant on the day care with assistance from the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team where several firearms and ammunition were found in Castillo-Ruiz’s room. Police have been in contact with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, since Castillo-Ruiz also has a pending case for federal charges involving firearms.

Police said there may have also been additional victims, which is currently being investigated. The department is also working with investigators from the California Department of Social Services, which oversees licensed day cares in the state.

Castillo-Ruiz is not currently scheduled to appear in court.

Police are encouraging anyone with information regarding the case to call Detective Juan Castillo at 831-768-3358.
