President Biden Calls Emergency Meeting with Congressional Leaders
President Joe Biden has called a meeting with cabinet officials at the White House on Tuesday to discuss emergency measures, including emergency aid to Ukraine and Israel, and to preserve a government shutdown next month. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell attended the meeting, which aims to get lawmakers to pass important legislation.
President Biden will speak with White House officials at the meeting about the importance of passing a bipartisan aid package for Ukraine and Israel. The bipartisan aid package is seen as important due to violence and armed conflict in the region. In addition, discussions will intensify on the law that will enable the government to continue working until the end of September.
The $95 billion national security package, which includes provisions to increase aid to Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific region, passed the Senate by a vote of 70 to 29. However, Governor Johnson refused to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan called on President Johnson to take action, citing the need to provide urgent support to Ukraine, especially with weapons and ammunition.
Meanwhile, concerns are growing about a possible government shutdown as the first program is scheduled to end on Friday. Senate Majority Leader Schumer highlighted the lack of agreement to avoid a partial shutdown and called on President Johnson to prioritize funding to keep the government running. Schumer called on Speaker Johnson to “fight the bad guys in the crowd” and ensure the federal budget is secure to prevent disruptions to essential services.
As domestic and international tensions rise, the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting at the White House will be closely watched for signs of bipartisan cooperation and resolution. Supreme verdict on the importance of the law.
