Rapper Rod Wave Arrested, Then Released on Erroneous Weapons Charge Following Shooting Investigation

St. Petersburg rapper Rod Wave found himself embroiled in legal turmoil after being arrested on Wednesday on charges related to a shooting incident in the city. However, his stint behind bars was short-lived as the charges were swiftly dismissed, citing inaccuracies, according to a police spokesperson.

The 25-year-old artist, born Rodarius Marcell Green, faced accusations of illegally possessing firearms or ammunition as a convicted felon in Manatee County. Yet, his legal representation quickly disputed these claims, asserting that Green was never convicted of a felony and lacked sufficient evidence for the charges.

In an interview with the Tampa Bay Times, Mark Rankin, one of Green’s attorneys, highlighted discrepancies in the arrest affidavit, noting that Green’s prior legal history did not align with the allegations. The erroneous arrest stirred controversy, prompting a prompt release from custody.

Confirming the misstep, St. Petersburg Police Department spokesperson Yolanda Fernandez acknowledged the error, stating that the charges were retracted due to inaccuracies. However, she emphasized that the investigation into the shooting incident remains ongoing, with potential for further arrests and charges.

The incident in question stemmed from a shooting outside the Sonic Sports Bar and Lounge, resulting in injuries to four individuals. While Green’s connection to the shooting remains uncertain, police executed search warrants at residences linked to him, leading to the seizure of firearms and other items.

Despite the legal ordeal, Green maintains his innocence and disassociation from any criminal activity. His legal team continues to assert his innocence, emphasizing his positive contributions to the community and his music career.

Rod Wave, a native of St. Petersburg’s Cromwell Heights neighborhood, rose to prominence in the music industry with hits like “Heart on Ice.” Despite occasional brushes with the law, including a prior arrest in 2022, Green’s musical endeavors have garnered widespread acclaim and success.

As the investigation unfolds, questions linger regarding Green’s involvement in the shooting and his ties to individuals associated with criminal activities. However, for now, the rapper remains focused on his music and his commitment to his community, leaving behind a turbulent legal episode as he continues to pursue his artistic aspirations.
