Rare Earthquake Rattles Florida’s Space Coast Ahead of Rocket Launch

February 8, 2024

In an unusual turn of events, a rare earthquake jolted residents along Florida’s Space Coast late Wednesday night, sending tremors through the region just hours before a scheduled rocket launch. The seismic event, measuring a magnitude of 4.0, occurred approximately 101 miles east of Cape Canaveral, causing widespread surprise and curiosity among locals.

Reports from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the earthquake struck around 10:50 p.m., prompting numerous accounts of shaking from areas including Melbourne, Palm Bay, St. Augustine, and Cocoa. Although the quake’s intensity was felt across a significant distance, there were no reports of significant damage or injuries.

Notably, the shallow depth of the earthquake, measuring just over 6 miles, contributed to its perceptibility to residents along the Space Coast. According to Michigan Tech, earthquakes of this magnitude are often felt but typically result in only minor disruptions.

Residents shared their experiences on social media platforms, with many expressing surprise at the rare occurrence in a region not typically associated with seismic activity. FOX 35 Storm Team Meteorologist Jessica Dobson remarked, “Some remarkable stuff. That’s pretty rare that that happens around here because there’s no major fault lines nearby either.”

The seismic event came on the eve of NASA’s PACE mission launch, adding an unexpected element of intrigue to an already eventful evening. The PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) mission, aimed at advancing the assessment of ocean health, proceeded with its scheduled launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station despite the seismic activity.

While earthquakes in Florida are uncommon, they are not unprecedented. The most recent reported earthquake in the state occurred on September 3, 2020, with a magnitude of 1.8 just south of the Florida-Alabama border.

As residents along the Space Coast reflect on the rare occurrence, authorities and experts continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and vigilance in the face of unexpected natural events.

For those who experienced the earthquake firsthand, the USGS encourages reporting their observations to contribute to ongoing research and understanding of seismic activity in the region.
