Texas Central School Bus is laying off employees as the school district it serves decided to not renew its contract.
Texas Central School Bus told the Texas Workforce Commission in an April 28 letter that it plans to cut 427 jobs, including drivers, and close three locations in Lewisville and The Colony. Lewisville Independent School District decided not to renew the contract, which expires July 31, and instead is creating its own transportation department.
Lewisville ISD purchased 286 buses between April and June 2020, according to an April 30 school board presentation. The district’s transportation budget runs about $16 million. Moving forward with a contractor would have increased costs between $3 million and $5 million, Lewisville Superintendent Lori Rapp said during the meeting. A 1% staff raise would require $3.7 million.
The school district would still have to increase the budget by $2 million to accommodate the in-house transportation system, Rapp said. The school district is looking to pay bus drivers starting at $23 an hour and monitors starting at $15 an hour. Dana Chandler will be the director for the new department.
