The Sydney Sixers will travel to Hobart for the opening Big Bash finals match of the season against the Hurricanes on Tuesday after a rain-affected draw which saw just 31 balls bowled at the SCG.

Play was called off after 5.1 overs of the Sydney Thunder’s innings with David Warner (22 off 14 balls) and Hugh Weibgen (one off three balls) at the crease. Sam Konstas perished for nine, bowled by Jack Edwards in a match that never got going.

Rain stopped play on several occasions as more than 20,000 fans braced wet conditions.

It means the Sixers and Thunder have finished the regular BBL season in second and third respectively. Results on Saturday and Sunday can’t change their position on the ladder.

The Hurricanes, who have one more match against the Stars on Sunday, will host the Sixers in Hobart on Tuesday evening. The winner will advance straight to the BBL final on January 27.

Meanwhile, the Thunder will host a finals match – dubbed the ‘Knockout’ – on Wednesday at 7:30pm at Sydney Olympic Park. They will play the Stars, Heat or Strikers, depending on results over the weekend.

Question from Matt: Do you think they will be able to finish the match today?

TD: Definitely won’t get the full overs in, but we might have a result. Main covers are coming off (8:58pm).

It’ll be a reduced fixture but the rain appears to have gone … for now.

Still a little bit until play can be abandoned.

Cricket Australia has sent out a run-sheet of what will happen if this match is a draw and teams split the points.

Speaking of food, Big John (John Fisher) is in the house. Blokes love a Chinese meal. Went viral during COVID for putting away Chinese meal after Chinese meal. Loved by many.

Covers are still on. No sign of play any time soon. A few fans spotted leaving already.

I’m told there were 22,845 when the first ball was bowled.

As the main covers come off at the SCG, it might be time for a quick bite. Thoughts?

Hang on. Covers back on. Bucketing down.

As we wait for the rain to clear, feel free to ping me a question or send a sledge. Not bothered.

Lot going on in the cricket world at the moment. Happy to answer any questions as we get to the pointy end of the BBL, women’s Ashes, and the start of a fascinating two-Test tour of Sri Lanka.

Before play, there was a bit of an issue in the O’Reilly Stand at the SCG. Part of the roof fell off.

This statement has just come in from Venues NSW.

“During tonight’s severe winds and storm, a piece of vinyl soffit sheeting from the O’Reilly Stand became loose and was identified by venue staff,” the statement reads.

“Venue staff immediately vacated patrons from the area to ensure their safety.

“After the area was cleared, the piece of vinyl soffit sheeting became detached.

“Two seating bays have been cleared and patrons have been provided seating in another grandstand.

“As per standard processes, pre-event inspections had taken place across the venue before gates opened.

“Further inspections are underway. The safety of our patrons remains our number one priority.”

At 7:55pm, ground staff are sprinting onto the SCG.

The second rain relay of the match. Not ideal given there’s a big crowd in.

The Thunder are 1-36 in the sixth over.

Jack Edwards produces a pearler of a yorker that smashes into Konstas’ stumps.

And doesn’t he love it. Great celebration. The teenager is out for nine, coming off 53 in his last match.

Hugh Weibgen comes to the crease, bumped up the order from No.6 to No.3.

Thunder 1-32 off 3.5 overs

A real sign of intent from the ‘Bull’, ‘Reverend’, ‘Davey’ … whatever you want to call him.

Cracks a couple of aerial boundaries into the off side. Lovely cricket.

First ball of the next over, Konstas finally gets off the mark with a gorgeous cover drive off Sean Abbott after advancing down the pitch. Four of the best.

A Warner six over cover. Ludicrous striking.

A decent crowd have made their way into the SCG. Members? Plenty of spare seats.

Thunder 0-25 off three overs.
