AUSTIN, Texas — Texas state Sen. Bryan Hughes filed a resolution Wednesday that would make Texas’ official gun the cannon.

Hughes, R-Mineola, authored Senate Concurrent Resolution 22, saying that the cannon has been an important weapon in the state’s fight for liberty and independence.

In this new resolution, Hughes notes that the first confliction in the Texas Revolution, the Battle of Gonzales, was about fighting over a cannon back in October 1835. Instead of giving up their bronze six-pounder, the Texan rebels declared the now-famous, “Come and take it!” That phase and the cannon would later be painted on a flag created by the women of Gonzales.

Hughes said that flag has become one of the iconic images of the Lone Star State. The resolution also mentions when Austin innkeeper Angelina Eberly fired off a cannon on the corner of Sixth Street and Congress Ave. She did this in reaction to Texas Republic President Sam Houston sending Texas Rangers to take the government’s archives as he tried to move the capital from Austin to Houston. Eberly not only scared some Austin residents, she blew a hole in the General Land Office.

In today’s times, vintage artillery pieces can be seen at county courthouses, military installations, and historical sites across Texas, the resolution stated. Hughes continued in saying that the firing of a cannon is an honored tradition at celebrations across Texas.

“These historic weapons serve as powerful reminders of our state’s epic struggle for freedom, and they further highlight the unique heritage shared by all those who are proud to call Texas home,” Hughes wrote.

Back in 2021, the Texas Legislature and Gov. Greg Abbott approved a resolution making the 1847 Colt Walker pistol the official handgun of Texas.

“It was invented by a Texas Ranger & was America’s first six-shooter. It was the gun of choice for US soldiers during the Mexican American war,” Abbott said on Twitter in 2021.
