Government proposes fining parents who take kids out of school without permission
Parents who take their children out of school without permission could receive fines or other sanctions, according to a new proposal from Sweden’s government.
The government has appointed an inquiry to look into how parents who take kids out of school for holidays or other reasons, despite the school’s refusal, could be fined.
“We have seen examples of parents who apply for leave, do not get that leave, and take their children out of school anyway to, for example, sit on a sandy beach in Thailand,” said Sweden’s new education minister Simona Mohamsson.
Swedish vocabulary: en sandstrand – a sandy beach
Government invites Social Democrats for talks on Israel position
Sweden’s government has invited the opposition Social Democrats to work together to put pressure on Israel, the Aftonbladet newspaper has reported.
“We are trying to convince more countries to sharpen their tone on Israel. If the Social Democrats can help us, it would be extremely positive,” Sweden’s aid minister, Benjamin Dousa, told the newspaper.
The Social Democrats’ foreign policy spokesperson Morgan Johansson has sharply criticised the government’s position on Gaza.
Johansson told TT he was looking forward to the invite.
“But if the government is serious about cooperating, they can decide right now to return funding to Unrwa, demand that the EU freeze its trade deal with Israel, and take measures to stop goods from Israeli settlements being sold on the Swedish market.”

A blast did serious damage to the entrance to a block of flats in Hyacintgatan in Malmö on Wednesday night, with police, fire services on the scene and the national bomb squad called.
“Residents have been evacuated and the bomb squad is on the way to check that there’s nothing else that can explode, and to make the place secure,” Jerker Olsson, from the local police, told the TT newswire.
No one was injured in the explosion, which shattered glass in the entrance and on a nearby balcony. Police are investigating the attack as “destruction causing public endangerment”.

‘Hesa Fredrik’ emergency sirens stolen in Dalarna
Several speakers for Sweden’s network of emergency sirens have been stolen in Dalarna this spring and summer, the Dala-Demokraten newspaper has reported, with four horns stolen in Borlänge and two in Ludvika. Sweden’s emergency sirens, called Hesa Fredrik, are tested across Sweden on the first Monday of every month.
“I have been in the industry for 40 years and while I perhaps remember the occasional horn disappearing, it’s never happened to this extent,” Per-Anders Berthlin, the head of the rescue services in central Dalarna, told SVT.

Coop recalls super sour ice cream
The Coop supermarket chain has recalled its ”Extreme Sour Fusion” ice cream because it lacked text on its packaging warning consumers about just how sour it is.
“The reason for the recall is the absence of text warning that the product can cause discomfort for sensitive consumers,” Coop wrote in a press message.
Several consumers have contacted the chain complaining of irritation in and around their mouths after consuming the ice cream, which contains a high level of citric acid.
Swedish vocabulary: extremt sur – extremely sour
