Toyota Motor North America Inc. Chief Operating Officer Jack Hollis has retired and another executive is set to take his place.
The Plano-based subsidiary of the Japanese automotive giant announced Jan. 22 Hollis’ retirement, effective immediately. Mark Templin will succeed Hollis and report to Ted Ogawa, president and chief executive of TMNA, starting Jan. 27.
Hollis, who was also an executive vice president, joined Toyota in 1992, serving in various national and regional management positions for Toyota, Lexus and Scion. During his 33-year tenure, he became one of the company’s most prominent leaders.
Hollis said he was stepping down to “take on new challenges” and that he has been weighing the decision for some time.
“Some time ago, Jack let us know he wanted to retire. During his time here, Jack has been instrumental in building a world-class sales and marketing team, exceptional dealer relationships and served as a true brand advocate for the Olympics and Paralympics,” Ogawa said in a statement. “We’re thankful for his dedication to Toyota and wish him well.”
CBT News, an online source for auto industry news, reported dealers were surprised by the announcement.
Mark Montenero, director of operations at Autoland Toyota, told CBT he was surprised by news of Hollis’ retirement but remains “confident the company will continue to thrive under Mark Templin’s leadership.”
Templin, a seasoned Toyota executive who has spent 35 years with the company, currently serves as the director and group chief operating officer of Toyota Financial Services Corp., CEO of the Americas Oceania Region and Toyota Insurance Management Solutions as well as chairman of the board for Toyota Motor Credit Corp. and Toyota Financial Savings Bank.
Templin joined Toyota in 1990 and has held various operational and field positions and helped shape the Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands in North America.
In addition to taking on Hollis’ responsibilities, Templin will continue to lead global strategy for TFS and other affiliated companies including Toyota racing development and product planning, according to the announcement.
After moving its headquarters to Plano from Torrance, California in 2017, Toyota Motor North America has become one of a major employer in North Texas, with around 5,000 workers last fall.

However, U.S. sales volume was down 2.7% in Q4 2024. The company said 2024 electrified vehicle sales climbed 53.1% to an all-time high.
