Tributes paid to former Lurgan Celtic FC captain after his sudden death on New Year’s Day

THE Northern Irish football community was plunged into morning this week.

Tributes have flooded in for Michael Downey, a former Lurgan Celtic FC captain following his sudden passing on New Year’s Day.

Tributes on social media described Michael as “a complete gentleman” and “one of the nicest people you could ever meet.”

Lurgan Celtic also offered their condolences with a touching social media post.

A statement read: “Lurgan Celtic Football Club are devastated to learn of the sudden death of our former Player & Captain, Micheal Downey

“Michael signed for the club from Linfield and went onto captain the club for a number of seasons and lifted the Radcliffe cup alongside Raymey Fitz, after doing his cruciate a few weeks before the final.

“Michael was a great footballer, but more importantly a great person that served our club immaculately over the years whilst achieving so much for/with us.

“Our sincere condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many teammates he played alongside during his career.

“Members of both the club and community as well as club supporters who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news at this most difficult of times.

“RIP Downey.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

The 39-year-old father of two was husband of Aine and loving father to Pippa and Teddy.

He was a much-loved son of Barry and Ann Downey and a dear brother to Lisa, Laura, and Louise.

Mr Downey was also a beloved son-in-law to Michael and Rosemary Purdy and a valued brother-in-law to Noeleen, Roisin, and Sean.

His funeral is scheduled for Saturday with the cortege leaving his home at Belvedere Manor, Lurgan, at 2.15pm for Requiem Mass at 3pm in St Peter’s Church.

That will be followed by interment at St Colman’s Cemetery.
