A woman found dead in an apartment building in Cork has been named locally as Paula Canty and remembered by those who knew her as having ‘a heart of gold.’
The body of the 31-year-old was found at around 10.30am on Friday at The Belfry on Bridewell Lane in Mallow.
The alarm was raised by a neighbour but police were too late to save her and she was found dead at the scene with noticeable injuries to her body.
As the tragic news of her passing came to light, friends rushed to share their condolences and memories of Paula.
One wrote: ‘One of the nicest, harmless girls you would meet [We] had many a laugh… [I] will hold those memories close girl, please God watch over her two children and her family. ‘
Another added: ‘R.I.P Paula Canty. Thank god we were never on bad terms… your life got robbed. Thinking of your family.’
‘Can’t believe this, heart of Gold, many of laughs we had,’ wrote someone else.
Gardai are treating Paula’s death as suspicious and a post-mortem examination is to be carried out at Cork University Hospital.
A senior investigating officer has been appointed to lead the investigation from Mallow Garda Station.
The Sunday World reports that Paula was known to gardai and has been living ‘a dysfunctional and chaotic lifestyle over recent years.’
Gardaí are currently conducting door-to-door inquiries into her death and have urged anyone who may have information about her final days to come forward.
They are also appealing for any camera footage from the area from 9pm on 2 January to 10 am on Friday 3 January to be handed in to police.
Anyone with any information is asked to phone Mallow Garda Station on 022 31450, or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
