Ogden gang task force officers shot and killed a “known white supremacist gang member with an extensive criminal history” after they say the man pulled a gun on officers who attempted to arrest him.
A white supremacist gang member was shot and killed by police early Friday after task force officers attempted to arrest the man at a West Haven motel.
A task force officer was also shot but survived, Ogden police announced. It’s unclear who shot the officer, or whether the unnamed suspect, who police say had a gun, fired at all.
Before 2 a.m., officers with the Ogden Metro Gang Task Force initiated an “operation” at a Motel 6, at 1206 W. 21st St., to arrest a man in connection with an armed robbery earlier in the week, according to a news release.
Ogden Police Chief Jake Sube, at a Friday morning news conference, described the man as a “known white supremacist gang member with an extensive criminal history.” Police had not released the man’s name as of Friday afternoon.
The man ran from police when they attempted to arrest him and, at some point, Sube said, pulled a gun.
“In response, two members of the gang task force discharged their weapons, striking the suspect,” Sube said.
He added that a member of the task force was also shot, but did not specify who shot the officer.
“While the [officer’s] injury is significant, thankfully, it is nonlife-threatening,” Sube said, “and the officer has been released from the hospital.”
Ogden Lt. J Vandenberg told The Salt Lake Tribune that the earlier robbery did not appear to be racially motivated, and said white supremacist gangs don’t have a “major presence” in Ogden.
The Weber County Attorney’s officer-involved “critical incident” team will investigate the shooting.
The officers who fired on the man have been placed on administrative leave, “a routine measure meant to protect the integrity of the investigation and support the well being of officers involved following the traumatic event like this,” Sube said.
He declined to release additional information about the shooting.
“We don’t want to release anything too early,” Sube said. “We want to make sure that you have the facts before speculating on what occurred.”
