Wild dashboard and body camera videos show the moments authorities say a South Florida attempted murder suspect stole a sheriff’s deputy’s cruiser, pulled up to a woman — apparently under the guise of a traffic stop — carjacked her and crashed her SUV.
The videos, obtained by Local 10 News on Wednesday, show what happened on Dec. 22 in Key Largo. A Monroe County Sheriff’s Office sergeant was trying to take Armando Lopez, 52, into custody after they said he tried to kill his ex-girlfriend at a home on Palm Drive.
“My dad is in my house hitting my mom to death,” his daughter is heard saying in a 911 recording.
Authorities said Lopez severely beat the 30-year-old victim, suffocated her by stuffing her mouth with a cleaning cloth soaked with Fabuloso and strangled her while repeatedly threatening to kill her.
After MCSO Sgt. James Hager arrived, Lopez punched him as he tried, unsuccessfully, to unholster the deputy’s gun; the sergeant ended up on top of Lopez’s 3-year-old son during the struggle, an arrest affidavit states.
Hager tried unsuccessfully to use a Taser on Lopez. The video shows the sergeant with the stun gun as Lopez gets inside of his cruiser and drives off.
“He just stole my patrol car!” Hager is heard saying in body camera video. “He’s running northbound. Lights are on. He tried to take my gun from my holster.”
Dashboard camera footage from his cruiser shows Lopez driving erratically before stopping at The Sandal Factory on 102411 Overseas Highway, lights flashing, and approaching an unsuspecting 46-year-old woman in an SUV, who appeared to think she was being pulled over by a deputy.
Instead, the video shows a shirtless Lopez exiting the cruiser and pulling on her SUV door.
“Get out,” he’s heard repeatedly telling the stunned victim.
Deputies and a state trooper were hot on his tail before he wrecked the woman’s SUV, rolling it over.
The video shows Lopez pinned under the vehicle as deputies pull him out.
A day after the incident, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay called it a “reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers routinely face while simply doing their jobs.”
Lopez remains in an MCSO jail facility as of Wednesday, held without bond on a laundry list of charges.
