In an April column, Lorrie Goldstein noted the Liberal government has never gotten anywhere close to its emission reduction targets. He cited a report from federal Environment Commissioner Jerry DeMarco. It found that achieving the 40-per-cent minimum target for 2030 would require measures that would cripple Canada’s economy.
Now, we may just reach targets once considered unattainable with help from an unexpected source. That source? Donald J. Trump!
Thanks to the ineptitude and inability of PM Mark Carney to reach any trade deal with Trump, and continuing, punishing U.S. tariffs on key manufacturing and resource sectors, our economy is indeed being crippled, if not outright decimated. The beneficial result is lower production, lower sales, fewer orders, therefore lower shipping requirements and reduced transportation emissions. All of which translate to lower total emissions.

For the good and future of climate, the environment and the planet, thank you, Donald.
It just is galling that Carney will be able to crow about the Liberals finally meeting an emission reduction target through the Trump back door. Or perhaps this is a key element of his elbows-down policy.

TERM STILL APPLIES
Re: EDITORIAL: Et tu, Chris? Politics and party betrayal, editorial, online, Nov. 5
The term useful idiot, for a foolish person whose views can be taken advantage of for political purposes, was first published in the British periodical The Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science, and Art in 1864.
Sadly, Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont has proven nothing has changed in 2025.

THE CLIMATE JET SET
It’s that time of year again when tens of thousands board private and commercial jets to attend a climate conference at an opulent location. There they will discuss ways and means to prevent others from burning jet and other fossil fuels.
They will also discuss technologies such as Teams and Zoom, which enable remote meetings. The meeting attendees will not use these technologies; they are for the serfs and peons. Their work is far too important to lead by example.
