DALLAS — A 4-year-old girl was shot Monday morning in southern Dallas at a gated apartment complex, officials say.

Police were called at about 10 a.m. to the 4700 block of Meadow Street, where they determined a child had been shot. When officers arrived, they learned the little girl was wounded and was already taken to a nearby hospital.

The family identified the girl to WFAA as 4-year-old A’Ziyah Donelson and said that she was undergoing surgery.

Investigators say early evidence suggests the child may have been shot by another young child who somehow gained access to a firearm. The circumstances surrounding how the weapon was obtained remain unclear.

DPD has not released details about the relationship between the children or who owns the gun.

The family confirmed to WFAA that there were teenagers inside the home during the incident, including some in their early 20s. DPD sources say those teens and young adults are currently being questioned.

Neighbors describe A’Ziyah as a “sweet girl” and say they’re praying for her recovery.

“It’s a kid. It’s sad. I cannot imagine if that happened to someone in my family. Their family must be hurt right now,” a neighbor told WFAA.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

This is a developing story. WFAA will update this story as more information becomes available.
