WASHINGTON (AP) — Three American service members have been killed and five others seriously wounded during the U.S. attacks on Iran, the military said Sunday, marking the first American casualties in a major offensive that has sparked retaliation from the Islamic Republic. U.S. Central Command, which oversees the Middle East, announced the deaths in a post on X but did not say when and where they occurred. The statement said “several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions” and were going to return to duty. Central Command described the situation “as fluid” and said it would withhold the identities of…

OTTAWA — National Defence is refusing to disclose how it analyzed competing fighter jet bids after a Swedish media report suggested the evaluation was weighted against Saab’s Gripen E. Citing confidential sources, the Swedish business publication Affarsvarlden reported that Ottawa added a risk coefficient to its analysis that significantly undermined the Gripen’s test scores because it was still a new series aircraft. The report comes after the federal government’s internal 2021 scorecard, revealing the topline totals from the analysis, was leaked to Radio-Canada in the fall. That document shows the American F-35 blowing the Swedish Gripen out of the water,…
NEW YORK (AP) — “Scream” is still making a killing. Thirty years after the original slasher movie opened in theaters, “Scream 7” debuted with a franchise-best $64.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The bigger-than-expected opening is a win for Paramount, which on Friday announced its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. In a so-far sluggish 2026 at the box office, “Scream 7” managed the best debut of the year, easily displacing last weekend’s champ, the Stephen Curry-produced animated film “GOAT,” from Sony Pictures. “Scream 7,” which cost $45 million to make, got a boost from the return of Neve Campbell,…

The president of Iran’s soccer federation says he does not know if the national team can play World Cup matches in the United States following the surprise U.S. and Israeli bombardment of his country. “What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Mehdi Taj told sports portal Varzesh3 as Iran traded strikes with Israel as part of a widening war prompted by the bombardment. The U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran continued for a second day on Sunday after the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw…

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices rose sharply when market trading began Sunday, as U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and retaliatory strikes against Israel and U.S. military installations around the Gulf sent disruptions through the global energy supply chain. Traders were betting the supply of oil from Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East would slow or grind to a halt. Attacks throughout the region, including on two vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, have restricted countries’ ability to export oil to the rest of the world. Prolonged attacks would likely…

A downtown Toronto councillor is once again calling for action to address reports from residents that some drivers are abusing and misusing accessible parking permits. “We are actively turning parking into housing, so the amount of parking that’s available is decreasing. At the same time, there’s a lot of construction, and so what we’re finding is rampant abuse of accessible permits,” Coun. Dianne Saxe, who represents Ward 11 University-Rosedale, told CityNews while showcasing an area with complaints off Davenport Road. “We need action. For the last three years, the staff are telling me there’s nothing they can do. Their hands…
MONTREAL — At just two years old, former Iranian-Canadian international model and actress Samantha Tajik left Tehran with her family, settling in Canada. With Iran under attack by the United States and Israel, and the supreme leader dead, Tajik reflects on what life might have been like if she had stayed. “I was an international model and actress, and that would be restricted in Iran. I would definitely never, never be able to pursue anything like that there,” Tajik said. “I was the first Iranian woman to win the title of Miss Universe Canada. And actually, to date, I’m the…
VICTORIA — Calls for an independent investigation into the shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., where eight people, including six children were shot last month, are growing. Federal Conservative MP Bob Zimmer, who represents the community in northeastern B.C., said the mourning families need answers around various aspects, including the shooter’s mental health and access to guns, as well as the role of artificial intelligence and the protection of the victims’ families. “What do you say to a Mom who lost her daughter or to a Dad who lost his son?” Zimmer said in a statement. “We need answers for those…
A cold warning is in effect for most of southern Ontario, excluding Toronto, as a system of very cold air moves through the region. The warning extends from London in the southwestern part of the province as far east as the Quebec border. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill, and the risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people…
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan opposition leader and winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize María Corina Machado said on Sunday that she will return to Venezuela in the coming weeks and that elections will be held in the South American country. Machado did not set a date for her return but said that one of the objectives will be to prepare “for a new and gigantic electoral victory.” In a message shared on social media, the politician called on her supporters to “strengthen the unity of Venezuelans that began with the primaries,” a reference to the 2023 process in…
HALIFAX — An advocacy group of farmers and environmental organizations wants Health Canada to implement mandatory labelling on pork from gene-edited pigs. Earlier this year, the federal agency approved the sale of gene-edited pigs as food. The pigs are resistant to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, called PRRSV-resistant pigs. “It is expected that by addressing PRRSV in pigs, farmers can prevent severe illness and death in their herds, reduce the need for antibiotics, and improve animal welfare,” Health Canada said in an email to The Canadian Press. In January, Health Canada released a statement saying that the pigs do…
Another large construction project is set to close several downtown Toronto intersections for most of the rest of this year, with a brief break during the World Cup. The intersection of College and Bay streets will be closed to vehicles and cyclists starting March 2 for a combination sewer and streetcar track replacement. The first phase of the work involves replacing aging streetcar tracks as well as overhead upgrades, and is expected to take six weeks before the intersection is reopened in mid-April and construction pauses ahead of the FIFA World Cup. During construction, the intersection will be fully closed…
