NEW YORK (AP) — “Scream” is still making a killing. Thirty years after the original slasher movie opened in theaters, “Scream 7” debuted with a franchise-best $64.1 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. The bigger-than-expected opening is a win for Paramount, which on Friday announced its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. In a so-far sluggish 2026 at the box office, “Scream 7” managed the best debut of the year, easily displacing last weekend’s champ, the Stephen Curry-produced animated film “GOAT,” from Sony Pictures. “Scream 7,” which cost $45 million to make, got a boost from the return of Neve Campbell,…

The president of Iran’s soccer federation says he does not know if the national team can play World Cup matches in the United States following the surprise U.S. and Israeli bombardment of his country. “What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Mehdi Taj told sports portal Varzesh3 as Iran traded strikes with Israel as part of a widening war prompted by the bombardment. The U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran continued for a second day on Sunday after the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw…

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices rose sharply when market trading began Sunday, as U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and retaliatory strikes against Israel and U.S. military installations around the Gulf sent disruptions through the global energy supply chain. Traders were betting the supply of oil from Iran and elsewhere in the Middle East would slow or grind to a halt. Attacks throughout the region, including on two vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf, have restricted countries’ ability to export oil to the rest of the world. Prolonged attacks would likely…

A downtown Toronto councillor is once again calling for action to address reports from residents that some drivers are abusing and misusing accessible parking permits. “We are actively turning parking into housing, so the amount of parking that’s available is decreasing. At the same time, there’s a lot of construction, and so what we’re finding is rampant abuse of accessible permits,” Coun. Dianne Saxe, who represents Ward 11 University-Rosedale, told CityNews while showcasing an area with complaints off Davenport Road. “We need action. For the last three years, the staff are telling me there’s nothing they can do. Their hands…

MONTREAL — At just two years old, former Iranian-Canadian international model and actress Samantha Tajik left Tehran with her family, settling in Canada. With Iran under attack by the United States and Israel, and the supreme leader dead, Tajik reflects on what life might have been like if she had stayed. “I was an international model and actress, and that would be restricted in Iran. I would definitely never, never be able to pursue anything like that there,” Tajik said. “I was the first Iranian woman to win the title of Miss Universe Canada. And actually, to date, I’m the…

HALIFAX — An advocacy group of farmers and environmental organizations wants Health Canada to implement mandatory labelling on pork from gene-edited pigs. Earlier this year, the federal agency approved the sale of gene-edited pigs as food. The pigs are resistant to Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus, called PRRSV-resistant pigs. “It is expected that by addressing PRRSV in pigs, farmers can prevent severe illness and death in their herds, reduce the need for antibiotics, and improve animal welfare,” Health Canada said in an email to The Canadian Press. In January, Health Canada released a statement saying that the pigs do…
