A little while ago Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Angus Hines said while heavy rain has been one of the big ongoing concerns with the ex-tropical cyclone, but damaging winds were still battering Brisbane.
“In the Brisbane area in particular, those winds have really been racing,” he told ABC Radio Brisbane.
Hines said the tropical low was going to continue to move through South East Queensland and then into the Darling Downs over Sunday, and was likely to then swing south and cross into northern NSW.
“By that time, it will be really hard to make out on a satellite image,” he said.
“It will start to lose its shape a little bit, but it will continue to bring significant rainfall and the potential for flooding to both sides of the state border. That’s what we anticipate happening over the next couple of days.”
Two people have been injured by falling trees in separate incidents in Brisbane, as ex-tropical cyclone Alfred continues to make its way inland and fierce winds hit the city.
Parts of Brisbane have been experiencing fierce wind gusts up to 96km/h since 8pm, with debris flying through the air and tens of thousands of people without power.
A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said crews responded to two separate incidents of people being injured by trees on Saturday night, with one person taken to hospital.
“Paramedics assessed a stable female patient after a tree reportedly fell onto a vehicle on Anzac Avenue at 9.22pm. The patient has declined transport,” the spokesperson said.
A separate incident occurred earlier in the night in Moreton Bay, the spokesperson said.
“Paramedics have transported a stable patient to the Prince Charles Hospital with minor injuries after a tree reportedly fell onto a house on Francis Road in Lawnton at 7.50pm,” they said.
“There were three other occupants in the house, but they did not require transport.”
Queensland Police said soutbound lanes of the Bruce Highway near Gympie Arterial Road are also closed due to a fallen tree.
Wild weather is battering large parts of South East Queensland and northern NSW, and severe weather warnings remain current with heavy to intense rainfall in those areas, as well as “dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding” warnings over coastal and nearby inland areas.
NSW SES has issued advice for people living in affected areas, and says those in warning areas should stay indoors.
“Destructive winds can cause injury and damage to property,” the SES said.
“Flash flooding can occur suddenly and without an official warning. Monitor rainfall in your areas and avoid travelling during heavy rain.”
The SES recommended lifting items including waste and chemicals above expected flood heights, and prepare emergency kits with essentials such as medications, important documents and family photos.
“Flash flooding can occur suddenly and without an official warning. Monitor rainfall in your areas and avoid travelling during heavy rain,” the SES said.
“If you are near the beach or a coastal waterway, storm surge could cause flooding. This is dangerous. Decide now where you will evacuate to.”
