A taoiseach used to get away with a Waterford Crystal bowl of shamrock and a joke about the White House being built by an Irishman – twice. The gag was usually at the expense of the UK ambassador present in the crowd, as it was pointed out the celebrated Kilkenny-born architect James Hoban designed the original building and then did so again after British forces torched the White House and the Capitol in 1814.
