Kneecap has never been a band that mince their words, and the strongly worded message that they issued following their Oscars nomination snub proves that.
Fans of the band were left shocked when they didn’t get nominated for an Oscar in any category on Tuesday, despite being hotly tipped to have a clean sweep at the ceremony.
Kneecap responded to the snub in their typical fashion, by issuing a short (and not-so-sweet) message online. The trio took to their joint Instagram account to write: ‘F**k the Oscars.’ They followed the statement by saying: ‘Free Palestine.’
The rappers, known as DJ Próvaí, Mo Chara, and Móglaí Bap, accompanied the message with an image adapted from the 1970 book cover of The British Media and Ireland – Truth: The First Casualty.
The red and black image replaced the words ‘British Media’ with ‘Oscars’ to read: ‘The Oscars and Ireland.’
Fans were quick to console Kneecap about their Academy Awards snub, flocking to the comments to share their thoughts.
‘Lads, no need to worry – that’s how you know your film is actually good,’ one person wrote, while another said: ‘Your movie was my absolute favourite last year. You absolutely don’t need an Oscar.’
‘Absolutely ROBBED!!!’ a third person penned, while a fourth added: ‘Snubbed!!!!!!’
While no Irish actors received nominations for the awards, which were announced by Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang at the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater on Tuesday, it wasn’t all bad news.
The controversial Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice received nods for best actor (Sebastian Stan) and best supporting actor (Jeremy Strong). The movie was produced by Irish production company Tailored Films.
The company will be flying the flag for Ireland at the 97th Academy Awards.
