For Kulwinder Kaur and her husband Samarjeet Singh making the move from Airdrie to Calgary’s northeast community of Homestead was a logical next step.

“I’m a realtor and I work all over the place — Calgary, Airdrie, Chestermere — and I needed to be somewhere that is in the middle,” says Kaur. Her husband was also wanting to live in a more central location, as he has a siding, roofing and construction company and is constantly on the go, travelling across the city each day.

“Every single day I come to the northeast for work, so I know Homestead really well and I love it,” says Kaur, noting that it has just the right balance of location and amenities. “Plus, we are from India and there is a really strong Indian community in Homestead, and we have lots of friends already in the community.”

Dennis Inglis, vice-president of land development for Partners Development Group, the developer behind Homestead, says that the theme and feel of Homestead are inspired by the prairie landscape. “People appreciate the big skies, prairie fields and the small-town, romantic feel of Homestead. It’s a place where they can truly feel at home, away from the city.”

Touted as the fastest growing quadrant in Calgary, the northeast has plenty to offer in terms of amenities. Factor in Homestead’s unique location on the east side of Stoney Trail, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and its cosy feel (only 1,627 homes and two multi-family developments at final build-out) and the appeal is universal.

“One of the biggest themes of Homestead is walkability,” says Inglis. The community features 273 acres in Calgary’s northeast and features two ponds surrounded by paved pathways, a collection of green spaces known as pocket parks, along with a pedestrian bridge over Stoney Trail connecting the community to 80th Avenue N.E.

“We also designed the community with a centralized gathering space that is a designated future school and community association site. The location will make it easy for residents to walk to community activities, creating a cohesive community feel,” says Inglis.

For this busy couple, the location was ideal, with easy access to Stoney Trail, McKnight Boulevard and the future Airport Trail expansion allowing them to travel to any part of Calgary and area with ease.

The community is close to the family’s place of worship and to several grocery stores. Amenities in the works for the community of Homestead include a cricket pitch and a soccer field as well as a new playground. A commercial corner with a Tim Hortons and a gas station has recently opened with more amenities slated to follow soon, including a medical centre, daycare fitness centre grocery and liquor store, butcher shop, pizza shop, restaurant and 2,000 square feet of event space.
