The government-commissioned third-party report into procurement and contracting practices at Alberta Health Services (AHS) has missed another deadline, remains incomplete, and was not published Wednesday as promised, according to the province.

The interim report by retired Manitoba judge Raymond Wyant was to have been due on Wednesday after already having been delayed by nearly four months.

In a statement, Communications and Public Engagement deputy minister Enyinnah Okere said the interim report would not be published Wednesday as planned.

“Judge Wyant is wrapping up interviews and his interim report is expected in the coming days,” it reads.

“Given that this matter is still currently under investigation, no further comment can be provided at this time.”

Wyant was announced in March to lead the investigation with his interim report initially to be due in May and later pushed back until Sept. 24. His final report was to have been published by June 30 but is now scheduled to be completed by Oct. 15, a delay of three months and 16 days.

On March 10, Justice Minister Mickey Amery said during question period that Wyant’s interim report would be made public on its initial due date.

“I believe that he will lead an independent investigation that will yield information that all Albertans deserve to know. He will deliver an interim report on May 30, 2025, and that will be posted online for all Albertans to see.”

The investigation was sparked by allegations made in a wrongful dismissal lawsuit by former AHS head Athana Mentzelopolous who claims she was fired after investigating evidence of political interference within health care procurement and contracting.

Litigation is ongoing and no claims have been proven yet in court. The government denies wrongdoing.

The RCMP and the province’s auditor general are also investigating.

Mentzelopolous said last month she had not yet been interviewed by Wyant though her lawyer told Postmedia she was interviewed earlier this month.

Renewed calls for public inquiry

Opposition house leader Christina Gray said in a statement that New Democrats expected Amery to be true to his word and publish the report Wednesday, while also scaling back expectations for Wyant’s final report.

“We will not be surprised if this report — with every last detail controlled by the same people implicated in the scandal — ends up being a total whitewash of this government,” she said, while also reiterating the Opposition’s demand for a public inquiry into the allegations.
