(Re: ‘Takin’ out the trash,’ Calgary Sun, Sept. 20) Devika (Desai), I have to comment on what a wonderful article you wrote. The story about Matthew was inspiring about someone who is making a difference for himself and the community. It spurred me to clean up a waste bin that someone left near a ballpark and it was upsetting my walk and probably others. As a retired teacher, I also know how hard it is for kids growing up dealing with ADHD, depression, bullying and peer pressure and how Matthew is dealing with it, especially choosing homelessness. We need more stories like this from the Calgary Sun versus the right-wing rhetoric about how great things would be under a Conservative government who haven’t done very much in the past.

ALAN J HAMALIUK
(We could all learn a little something from Matthew’s story)
Woke & wasteful
Woke Gondek and her climate emergency is just more extreme left propaganda. Gondek had no problem spending $4 million in taxpayer dollars on a lame city logo, Blue Sky City. A high school student could have done that for a hundred bucks. And how is that better than Feel the Energy. Oh ya, we can’t be using energy in this woke world of hers. Gondek spent $65,000 bringing a phone line to the Bow River, $112,000 to rebrand herself. Careless and misguided use of taxpayer dollars.

Gov’t spin
I read Rick Bell’s column on the offer by Smith and company to Alberta teachers. This government so misrepresents the facts in this case that I will not belabour readers with all the government’s wilful misdirections. For example, the 3,000 new teachers to be added in the future are not to alleviate the stress of huge classroom sizes but reflect the growth in projected student population.

ABRAM WIEBE
(Still a step in the right direction)
Carney out of line
Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a statement recognizing a Palestinian state, contrary to Canada’s long history of Israeli support. Conditions of the recognition include the Palestinian Authority holding elections in 2026 and the demilitarizing of the state. How can Carney ensure this happens? How can he ensure Hamas complies? And, thirdly, should this decision not have been debated in the House where MPs could voice the views of their constituents? This was a seismic shift in Canada’s position needing some serious thought.
JANE GILBERT
(This is such a blunder by the Carney government. In short, there is no way of ensuring any of the conditions for recognition will be fulfilled)
