Firefighters are looking into the possibility a lightning strike caused a house fire in north Calgary Monday afternoon.

Calgary fire department crews were sent to the 100 block of Kincora Mews N.W., east of Shaganappi Trail and south of Symons Valley Parkway, around 2:45 p.m. for reports of a fire.

“On arrival, there were smoke and flames from the rear of the structure,” fire department Battalion Chief Andy Poniecki said in a message to Postmedia.

The home wasn’t occupied and the fire was quickly put out, he said.

“Although not certain, it is possible the fire was caused by a lightning strike,” he added.

Fire crews remained at the scene through the afternoon to check for hot spots. No one was injured in the incident.

The blaze occurred as a huge swath of southern Alberta was under a thunderstorm watch, while many areas including the City of Calgary were under a thunderstorm warning.

The warning for Calgary ended shortly before 4 p.m.

“Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Large hail can cause significant damage and injury.”

Forecasters also warned residents to take precautions to protect from lightning strikes.
