CARROLLTON, Texas — Drivers in the Carrollton area should expect overnight detours this week as part of ongoing construction along IH-35E.
From April 8 through April 11, the eastbound and westbound direct-connector ramps from the President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) to southbound IH-35E will be closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
These closures are tied to Phase 2 of TxDOT’s IH-35E improvement project, a major, multi-year effort to expand and modernize the corridor between Dallas and Denton. Phase 2 began in the spring of 2022 and is currently expected to reach substantial completion by late 2025. The work focuses on widening the freeway, upgrading interchanges, and improving ramp connections—all aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving safety through one of the region’s most heavily traveled corridors.
The busy interchange connects several suburbs and serves as a key route for both everyday drivers and commercial traffic. The improvements underway on IH-35E in Carrollton include lane expansions and reconfigured connectors, including the ramps currently being closed overnight.
During the closures:
- Eastbound PGBT to southbound IH-35E: Drivers will exit at Sandy Lake Road, turn right, then follow the southbound frontage road to re-enter IH-35E.
- Westbound PGBT to southbound IH-35E: Drivers will exit at Old Denton Road/Dickerson Parkway, turn left, then left again onto the frontage road to reach IH-35E.
Message boards will be posted in the area to alert drivers, and all closures are subject to weather conditions. If rain delays the work, the closures will be rescheduled.
While overnight construction is designed to reduce the impact on daytime commuters, drivers are still encouraged to allow extra time and pay close attention to detour signs.
