If a picture paints a thousand words, Queen Letizia and King Felipe are sending a strong message with theirs. The pair appeared united as ever in powerful new portrait shots, despite the turmoil they went through in the last few months.
The Spanish Royal family has faced their fair share of controversy this year between cheating scandals and public backlash, but the couple seem to be unphased by the drama.
They look regal in newly released portraits snapped by world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. The separate photographs act as a diptych; they’re designed to be put alongside one another in order to come together as a continuous scene.

The king and queen posed for the snaps in the decadent Gasparini Hall of the Royal Palace in Madrid. Letizia looked breathtaking in her portrait, wearing an elegant black and red look.
She donned a sweeping, strapless gown by Spanish designer Cristóbel Balenciaga, which was dramatised by a striking satin red cape draped over her arms. The bold colour resembles that of Spain’s red and yellow flag.

Letizia paired the gorgeous look with elegant ‘Diamond Rivere’ drop earrings and a matching necklace, which was once owned by the late Spanish Queen Ena.
The necklace belonged to a group of three, called the ‘Joyas de Pasar’ collection. Queen Ena created the collection in her will, intending the jewels to be passed from monarch to monarch.

Meanwhile, Felipe cut a strong figure, standing proudly in his military uniform. Letizia is not the only one brandishing jewels, as the king wore a host of glistening medals and badges in the snap.
The regal photos were taken in February to mark the powerful couple’s 20th wedding anniversary, and are currently on show to the public at the National Bank in Madrid.
