Police said they arrested the two women on Thursday.
PITTSBURG — Two women who police were seeking for their suspected roles in the abuse of a small dog have been arrested, police said.
The women were arrested Thursday, according to a statement from Pittsburg police. Police had been investigating them since a video emerged of one of the women kicking a small dog so hard it flew in the air during a dispute with somebody else.
The women, who are 47 and 18, respectively, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty; conspiracy to commit animal cruelty; assault with a deadly weapon; being armed with a gun during a felony; and giving a false report to police, according to Pittsburg police Lt. William Hatcher.
The attack happened Feb. 19 about 2:30 p.m. on Edgewater Place, he said. According to Hatcher, at least one of the women retrieved a gun from their vehicle and brandished it at the dog’s owner.
Police said detectives worked intensively to identify the two women involved in the incident and issued arrest warrants for the two on Wednesday.
“The greatest community help came from our social media followers, who were able to direct us toward the (suspect’s) social media account and provide us with updates related to activity and modifications to those accounts,” Hatcher wrote in an email. “This helped us develop patterns of activity and allowed detectives to narrow their search locations.”
Jail records showed the older woman was in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on Friday morning in lieu of $172,500 bail. The younger woman was at the West County Detention Facility also in lieu of $172,500 bail.
Police said the dog named Gigi is OK. An online fundraiser created in the aftermath of the attack to pay for its vets bills raised more than $20,000. The fundraiser statement said the dog suffered some liver failure as a result of the kick.
Video of the incident taken by home surveillance video showed one of the women approaching the dog and kicking it.
