Is it OK for the captain (or co-captain) of an AFL club to meet with a rival team’s coach just weeks into the season?
Melbourne Demons coach Simon Goodwin says it’s not something he’s a fan of, the responsibility of captainship doesn’t change players’ rights.
Goodwin was speaking, of course, about West Coast Eagles co-captain Oscar Allen’s recent meeting with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell.
Allen is a restricted free agent, so of course it’s his right to consider his options. But so early in the season?
Asked about the meeting yesterday, Goodwin said no one was off-limits in the process of clubs hunting down a strong addition.
“Supporters, I think, would be similar; they probably don’t like it, but they also would love to get some great players to their footy club, so you can’t have it both ways,” he said.
Allen, who is out of contract at the end of this season, is yet to address his teammates about the meeting, according to 9News.
An emergency bushfire is burning dangerously close to homes in the Perth southern suburb of Ferndale.
The blaze was reported at 4am Thursday morning, with residents near Canning River told to evacuate their properties.
“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes,” the Department of Fire and Emergency Services alert read.
The emergency zone includes people west of Canning River between Nicholson Road, Metcalfe Road, Latham Road and Willcock Street.
It was a smoky drive in to work for many commuters on the Kwinana Freeway this morning, with haze slowing traffic across the Mount Henry Bridge and obscuring a usually clear view of the CBD across the river.
Here’s what’s making headlines today. Spoiler alert, it’s all about Trump and his tariffs:
A top of 31 degrees and cloudy. What is this weather?
Good morning readers, and welcome to our live blog for Thursday.
This morning, we have some more bad news for Perth renters (what’s new?).
Property reporter Sarah Brookes writes that the rental market has re-accelerated, with a diabolically low vacancy rate of 0.4 per cent driving tough competition and record high rents only worsened by an unfortunate supply-demand feedback loop.
Yikes. Luckily, there are still some suburbs where bargains can be found. You can read on to find out more here.
In some better news, we have rounded up the best of the best when it comes to WA’s food and drink events.
Good Food’s Max Veenhuyzen has compiled a list of the top five events to add to your calendar.
They include a new format for a much-loved regional food festival celebrating African culture, plus a high-powered Australian fine dining experience heading west for one night only.
You can see what those events are here.
Meanwhile, Independent Curtin MP Kate Chaney has launched an extraordinary tirade against Seven West Media, accusing the company of running a “smear campaign” against her as she vies for reelection in her formerly blue-ribbon seat.
